The only thing I did to get my cable modem working is make sure I had DHCP
set up, I made sure eth0 was where it belonged in the network card settings,
then added my two DNS numbers. I didn't have to edit any files or change
any other settings.

I have found when I "over-configure" the out-bound NIC, things don't work
properly. This could be the case with your configuration...it's worth a
shot.
