Are you sure that a lot of Windows was written in basic and VB? I was under
the impression that most of it was written with MFC, especially MS Office, I
know for a fact that Wordpad is written in MFC (not that that's a
significant piece of software or anythning). I think most of 3.1 was
written in plain C, and NT and 95 started the move towards C++ and the
creation and utilization of the MFC C++ library. I was also under the
impression that whole problems surrounding OS2 was that Microsoft helped IBM
build the OS but in assembler which was very slow going, and MS was building
NT in secret using C and C++ which allowed them to develop and make
modifications much more quickly than IBM could...
I could be total wrong, I can't back up any of this....
ps: also, I remember running 3.1 for a short time, it was always crashing
(you could also watch it eat your resources over a course of a few days
after which you were forced to reboot). I was one of the first to get 95 at
work and it really was a blessing, I don't ever remember crashing while my
cube mates continued to battle with 3.1 -- however, I've been kind of
fortunate as far as windows crashing on me, besides the episodes with 3.1, I
don't ever remember 95 crashing except for an occasional lockup and when we
moved to NT4.0, it BSOD on me exactly twice each a year apart I don't know
what caused the first one, and the second one was caused by Y2K updates from
a consulting group.

they haven't written anything for the windows platform as a whole OS since
window 3.1. When they left DOS/GUI win 3.1 model and went to integrated
DOS/virtual GUI model a lot was already being written in basic and later
Visual Basic.
In windows 3.1 the OS operated much like X does in Linux. The GUI sat on
top of the OS and ran. It was a very effective and stable manner to
run. However, when they integrated DOS and made it part if the overall OS,
as in win 95 and later things began to change...a lot.
do a little research into the evolution of Windows and I think you will
find what I'm saying to be true.
