Subject: Installation of 8.0 Beta 1

I downloaded and installed the beta yesterday.

Here are just a few of my impressions.

The system on which I ran the installation is an
800 Duron
Asus A7V MOBO
384MB pc133
ATI Radeon 32MB DDR
3 ATA100 hds connected to the on board Promise controller
ide cd-rom
ide cd-rw
ide zip100
Linksys Lnetx100 ver.4.0
SB Live value

7.2, because of the onboard controller, could not/would not install on the
system but the 8.0 ran right out of the box, so to speak.

I ran the installation in Expert mode, Recomend and Expert only no custom
option, and installed all package qroups except for the Servers, and it
required just under 2GB of drive space.

KDE 2.1 and the 2.42 kernel are both the defaults. I also choose to install
X 4.0.2 with experimental 3D support for the Radeon.

All hardware was correctly seen and automaticlly set-up.
There is a problem with sound, system sound will not work regardless of
which window mgr. is used, though I can pop a cd in the drive and it plays
with any player. (They got rid of the damn padlocks too, thankfully)

DrakeConf has become an "all inclusive" program, the only problem being that
when you close it or any part thereof it causes the X server to crash.

MandrakeUpdate crashes while fetching the update list and is unusable. FYI
by the time of 8.0 release MU will no longer exist as a solo app but will be
incorperated into RPMDrake.

Over all I must say that I am very impressed, especially considering that
this is only beta 1.
If I can install some of the apps from the 7.2 Powerpack I may not even
bother booting 7.2
again.
