its /etc/mtab that tells you what actually gets mounted at boot.  fstab is 
what you hope gets mounted.  Can you not mount manually in a terminal?

To make an icon, right click the desktop and choose which type of shortcut 
you want then fill in the blanks.  In this case it would probably be a cdrom 
device.
