It is NOT the same as the RH unstable gcc2.96  It is a VERY stable pruning of 
the cvs tree which was tested for six full months.  We used the number 2.96 
because that number was officially abandoned by the gcc team.  We needed 
something less buggy than 2.95 which would also compile code for the Itanium.

Now gcc 3.0 is out.  Do not expect an immediate switch.  A compiler is a very 
precious thing, and we will test it til we are satisfied.
