Both workgroups and domains in NT/2000 are Windows-specific 
implementations that run over the SMB protocol (which in turn runs on top 
of TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or NetBEUI). In Linux, we use Samba to talk to Windows 
machines over SMB. This is all to support Network Neighborhood, file and 
printer sharing, and NT domain authentication. If you don't need these 
services, then you can simply set up a DNS server and configure TCP/IP in 
both Linux and Windows 2000 to use that DNS server.
