GMC = GNOME Midnight Commander. It was the default file manager for GNOME before Nautilus came along. If you have GNOME installed, you should be able to run it with "gmc --nodesktop" (to prevent it from populating your desktop with icons). There is also XWC = X WinCommander. It is built with its own C++ based toolkit called FOX. It also has some great little utilities, including a text editor, a text viewer, and a RPM viewer (very useful!).
