All you have to do is install 3.01 as well as 2.96 using Mandrake software manager. Then (it seems to be totally automatic) if you look at /bin/gcc you will see that it has become a symlink pointing to /etc/alternates/gcc which is itself a symlink to either /sbin/gcc2.96 or /sbin/gcc3.01 To switch between releases all you have to do is change this symlink.
