this may be a little late but you can set commands used in the "colon mode" to be there upon startup by placing them in your $HOME/.exrc file. my .exrc file contains two entries
set number set nobackup i placed nobackup there as i get irritated with all the redundant filename~ files which i delete immediately anyway.
