Robin,

I think what you may be looking for are the urpm* tools, you can use urpmi
(to install packages), urpme (to erase packages) and urpmf (to find
packages).  They are command line utilities, written by MandrakeSoft.  The
nice thing about urpmi is that it *will* install package dependencies from
CD's, and it will upgrade an existing package without any fancy
parameters.
