Thanks everybody for your help. I've got it working. It turns out that I had done way too much messing around. I re-installed the OS and ran the NVidia upgrade instead of the full install. The next time I started the machine I saw the nvidia splash screen and Tuxracer works perfectly. Now the kids are happy again.
