Not a stupid question - it appears to be a fairly elementary omission 
from LM :)

Things are halfway there - the kernel (8.2) appears to be set up but you 
need command-line tools to format CDRWs and set up the appropriate 
device. Download and install udftools-1.0.0b2.tar.gz from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-udf

After a lot of fiddling with parameters I've got it to recognise the 
drive and format CDRWs (via cdrwtool) but reading and writing files 
(via pktsetup) ... not yet.
