Here's how I do it - it may not be perfect for everybody. I receive mail using Netscape 6.2. I have set up a newbie folder and created a filter which sends mail with "[Newbie]" in the subject line and/or "newbie" in the sender line to this folder. The messages in this folder are sorted by thread. I read those threads which seem relevant to me and delete the rest unread (probably about 2/3).
