If it goes ahead as planned, it could hurt mandrake long term... (if they don't join)
simple reason is that if all those companies are promoting the use of unitedlinux then not many of them will advocate the use of a non unitedlinux based distro.. Then again, Mandrake is already lsb,, or close isn't it? so they dont have a huge amount of work to do to match it anyway.. so really, they could just wait till the disto appears and change to support total compatability with it.. and advertise as such.. without "rubbing heads" with anyone.. this is linux, not windows, they can do this without fear of legal repercusions... rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Miark Sent: Friday, 31 May 2002 6:02 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Announcement: UnitedLinux shane <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> saith: > the more i look at it the more it appears to be 4 companies with > questionable futures trying to hold each other up, but i will hope you are > right. I think this is probably accurate, too, but I don't find that bothersome because these are technically strong companies with significant contributions to make. And they have the blessing of most/all the companies that matter. > it isn't yet clear mandrake was invited to the party, but if they were you > may be right. >From their FAQ: "We want as many Linux distributors to join this effort as possible. That means not just Red Hat but also Mandrake, Red Flag and all the others around the globe. Each and every one of them is invited to join this initiative and Red Hat has been called by this group and invited personally already." It doesn't say if MDK was "personally" invited, but I think I read somewhere else that all distros were contacted. > still, if this is simply a full standard set, joining may > help get them on the corp desktop......unless it is simply the last act of > desperate companies. Like I said, I'm sure it's both. They have good financial reason to rub their heads together, but it's also a logical one that, if they play their cards well, should make some inroads for Linux.
