[newbie] Whats up with gcc?

Guys, I can't even compile one single program?! Whats up with that? I get the 
following error everytime I do a ./configure:

Your gcc does not support even "i386" for '-march' and '-mcpu'.

Any ideas? Geez, you have to be able to compile...
