Specifically, if you buy a premium economy ticket on an eligible international flight for travel departing between August 1 and August 31, 2026, you can receive a confirmed upgrade using your systemwide upgrades. The way this works, you have to request a systemwide upgrade on the international flight either through American's website, app, or call center. Within a few hours of submitting an upgrade request, American will confirm the upgrade to business class, assuming there are still seats for sale. Let me emphasize that this only includes international flights, so flights to and from Hawaii wouldn't qualify for this offer. For those with systemwide upgrades who value being able to confirm upgrades at booking, this could be a worthwhile opportunity. It also clearly reflects that August long haul bookings are looking pretty weak as of now.
