Lew,

     my guess is that the camera is setting the effective aperture due to
     changes in lens focal length and is not faulty. Your 28-85 is a
     variable aperture zoom, so any small change in focal length (and focus
     distance to a much lesser degree) will affect the actual effective
     aperture of the lens. So, if you set f5.6 and zoom towards 85mm, the
     camera will probably detect that the effective aperture has got
     smaller and vice versa. If your trannies are correctly exposed, don't
     worry, this sounds O.K. to me.
