<Do I really need the hood? I have been able to use the lens in bright
daylight yet - just cloudy weather. >

The FIRST time I took the Nikon School (about 20 years ago) they showed a
series of paired slides. In each case slide "A" was spectacular and slide
"B" lackluster, with diminshed contrast, color saturation and noticable
lack of specularity. The audience ALL presumed this was the intro to their
filter section which would stress the benefit of polarizers. Lo and behold,
according to them in EVERY case, the only difference was that the "B" group
was shot sans hood.

To this day, every lens I own (35mm and med format) has a hood and I use
them ALL the time.

<<MY opinion, not my boss's>>
