I wouldn't be so quick to throw the cards away.  Nikon USA has cleverly
divided the 5 years into a 1 year warranty followed by 4 years of "Extended
Service Coverage."  Therefore if you throw away the cards, you'll still get
the "warranty" -- 1 year.

BTW, for new equipment I always use my American Express card to get the
extra year of coverage that they (as well as some others) offer.

P.S.  I got lucky yesterday and happened to be placing an order during the
"one hour" that my dealer had some Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5-4.5's in stock.  This
was the walking around lens that I wanted five years ago when I first
considered AF (and seriously considered a Canon body because they made one
and Nikon didn't!).
