I have heard the Canon A2 is quiet mainly because it uses belts rather than
gear to gear connection in its motor drive.  That doesn't sound like something
Nikon would put into a high end camera though I can't think of a mechanical
reason why it would be a compromise.  I know belts do break or stretch but
that should be cheap to fix.
