By manual mode, I take it to mean manual exposure mode. The N70 has no
problems doing matrix metering in manual exposure mode with or without
flash. When you pop the built-in speedlight in manual exposure, even
though you are in Standard TTL only flash, matrix metering is still
available. And with a manual focus lens, you can choose spot metering
if you desire (though it is defaulted to center-weighted metering).

I'd also like to add that 3D Multi-sensor balance fill-flash is turned
off in manual exposure mode only for the built-in speedlight. If you
mount an external flash, 3D MSBFF IS available in manual exposure mode
(confirmed by the matrix icon on the SB-26). With the optimum
configuration of a N70, AF-D lens, and SB-26 in 3D MSBFF, all 3 metering
systems are available, i.e. spot, matrix and center-weighted, and in all
exposure modes.

>There is no 3D MSBFF mode available to manual focus.

Even though the instruction manuals for the N70 and SB-26 doesn't
explicitly say so, 3D Multi-Sensor Balance Fill-Flash IS available in
both manual focus and auto focus (once again confirmed by the Matrix
icon on my SB-26, N70, and AF-D lens combo in both manual and auto focus
mode) . How you focus has nothing to do with the fill-flash ability.

Yes

I gather the distance info is calculated only when you release the
shutter. With a CPU lens in manual focus, it is not impossible that the
N70 rely on the exact distance position on the lens focusing ring (in
focus or not) which is communicated electronically to the N70's computer
as you release the shutter, not before.
