folks,

it happened.

i recently dropped - yes, dropped - my BEAUTIFUL 28 f/2 (modified to AI)
lens. to be honest, i didn't just drop it, i rather sort of accidently threw
it away: it jumped out of my vest when i was on the run, hunting for a shot.
after 10 meters of twisting around on solid ground, it came to rest in the
middle of a busy road. i immediately stopped the cars, jumped after my
beloved piece of glass, taking the risk of a serious injury, and finally got
it.

guess what, it still works. the glass has absolutely no scratches. the
filter i had attached for lens protection did it's job just fine: it broke,
but it saved me my lens. i immediately shot two more rolls of tri-x, to
check whether there are any functional problems. there are none. i felt like
saying: it's not a trick, it's a --- nikon. BTW, i'd like to see a
plastic-fantastic USM-or-anything hopping around that way, just for
comparison.

nevertheless one problem occurred: the barrel got damaged, it was obviously
compressed by the impact. the the focus ring is now tight as hell. i
wouldn't mind that if i was arnie, but i have to admit i'm not.

has anybody else had such a nightmare experience with a comparable lens? is
there a way to get this repaired by nikon service or anybody else? the lens
(s/n 325094) should be about 25 years old, which means it still has the old
fashioned full metal focus ring. i'd really like to keep that beauty in my
lineup. it's not a matter of the money i had to spend on a new lens, rather
a matter of emotions. therefor i wouldn't mind sending my baby anywhere on
this planet, if i only could get it repaired.

any help would be appreciated.
TIA
