N90s and Vivitar 285HV

I'm thinking about getting A N90s for Christmas, and was wondering if it
would be OK to use the Vivitar on this camera? I thought I read
somewhere that it might damage the camera. I may be awhile before I can
afford to get a SB27 or 28.  Thanks, David
