James:

Sounds like you only have problems when there is a heavy amount of
SCSI traffic. (e.g. preview versus final scan).

The software is probably scanning to some temp file that it's
detecting the next time the application is used, reporting that the
last scan did not complete due to a failure.

In any event, I would suggest troubleshooting the SCSI bus. If there
are multiple devices, try removing everything EXCEPT the scanner. If
you still have problems, check for proper termination and try
replacing the cable. If you still have problems, you may have a
defective scanner. If you don't have problems, then there might be
some other cable or terminator (that was removed) that is causing the
problem. Bottom line is that it's usually a cable or termination
problem.

Also read the FAQs and check for firmware updates on
http://www.nikontechusa.com (they recently posted a firmware and
software update for the LS-30).

If you are using a 3rd party SCSI interface (Adaptec, UMAX, or ATTO),
check for firmware updates.

Hope this helps.
