< I've a question regarding the 300 f4 EDAF:
   Can this lens be used without a filter in its drop-in filter tray?
Is it necessary to have a filter in place at all times? If so why?
Is a polariser available for this lens?>

The L37C filter is part of the optical path and should be left in. The
Nikon 2473 is their 39mm drop-in circ pol for this lens.
