Hi, when you buy the lens new it comes with two filter drawers. One in the lens for the 39mm screw in filters and the one you mentioned which is used for gel filters. You need to find the right drawer. Also, from what I've heard and read, you need a filter in the drawer; it's part of the optical design. I don't know the Nikon model number (there's nothing stamped on mine) or how you might find one of these drawers but I'm sure Henry Posner or Ed Yost do. hope this helps rod
