Hi,

When bought new the AF-300/4 comes with two filter holders (at least mine did,
bought in NYC, 1992). The normal one is fitted with a screw in, 39 mm UV-filter
and is mounted in the lens. The other one is the gel. filter holder you
refer to. It came with the lens "in the box" and was included in the price. I
do think that a glass filter is the best to use since gel. filters are thinner
and the formula is optimized with the glass included. Using gel. filters would
be like using the lens without a filter in the light path which should degrade
the optical performance.
