You are doing it right.

Its the way it is done by Nikon on most of their bodies, except N5005 and
related models.

I too liked being able to adjust aperture and shutter speed from the two
dials on the body.  But, the vari-program feature of the N70 is almost as
good in that you can use the wheel to vary aperture and shutter speed
together along the curve of "correct" exposure.
