Woo! Who said that?

>In your discussions, did anyone propose a way of mounting a lens hood
>(presumably not an HN-1) plus filter (L37C or circ. polariser) on a 24/2.8.

While you do have to worry about vignetting with thick filters like
B+W,
slim filters, like Nikon's L37c, do not cause vignetting at all!
Other
filter manufacturers also make slim versions of some of their
filters. Of
course even Nikon's polarizer is thicker and will vignette the 24.

This is NOT true. I have had a Nikon Polarizer for many years that I
have successfully used many times on my 24mm f/2.8 with no hint of
vignetting. This is why Nikon makes their polarizing filters
'oversized', that is with a larger front diameter than the rear
'mounting' diameter.

Now, you cannot use a filter plus a lens hood combination on the 24mm
lens, but the filter by itself does NOT vignette.
