Flare in Nikkor wide angle lenses

Checking out slides I just shot in Uganda I find my "new" 28 f/2 (K, converted
to AI) is marvellously sharp but seem prone to flare problems - I was being
pretty careful to keep that infamous red dust off the filter, so I don't think
that was the cause. 

Has anyone else on the list had problems with flare with this lens? 

I need a fast wide angle that won't flare badly with backlit subjects. Any
suggestions? How about the 28 f/1.4 and the 24 f/2?
