As others have stated, short zooms as well as 80~200D zooms and longer,
will work fine at most average tracks. Try to go for a 300 f4 AF as
well--very sharp and light weight to boot!

But even though it is not Nikon specific, as the track photographer at a
venue that features NASCAR, Champ Car (CART), SCCA, FIA-GT, and so on, I
could not in good conscience let this thread go on without mentioning
the most important gear that you could possibly carry: A CLEAR MIND!

Motorsports by its' nature presents possible risks if you are not paying
attention to your surroundings. If you have pit access, remember that
short pants and sleeveless shirts are not allowed. Nor should you even
be in the pit or garage area if you have been drinking "adult
beverages."

Otherwise there are great images to be made...pan a lot (blurring the
background), make shots of your favorite drivers talking to fans, watch
the race too! (Record it on TV so that you can check it out later--the
race goes by so fast that you miss all the action, so it's good to
recap it later)

Have fun, be safe...
