Which mode were you using the camera in when the shutter stayed open for 8"
? Was it in slow sync or shutter priority mode ? Perhaps you
unintentionally had it set for 8" in shutter priority mode or slow sync was
on for Aperture priority or Program mode. When slow sync is on, the camera
would deliberately choose a slow shutter speed to expose for the background.

The LCD flashes after the built in flash fires indicates that the battery
power is running low.
