Nikon sees bigger losses for FY 1998
Kyodo News Service/Associated Press
TOKYO, March 10 (Kyodo) -- [ Nikon Corp. ] said Wednesday it expects to
report bigger pretax losses for the current business year ending March 31,
citing a prolonged slump in sales of its mainstay semiconductor
manufacturing equipment due to a weak semiconductor market.

Nikon said it expects an unconsolidated pretax loss of 10 billion yen on
sales of 250 billion yen against its earlier projections of a pretax loss
of 5 billion yen and sales of 270 billion yen.

On a group basis, Nikon expects a net loss of 17 billion yen and pretax
loss of 18 billion yen on sales of 310 billion yen. These figures are worse
than the net loss of 12 billion yen and pretax loss of 10 billion yen on
sales of 340 billion yen it forecast earlier.

Owing to the poor business performance, Nikon said it will only pay a
year-end per-share dividend of 3 yen for the year. It had paid a total of 8
yen in dividends per share the previous year, including an interim dividend
of 4 yen.

        Scary, isn't it? Any comments?

        Best regards,
