The Arca design is for a low profile, "open ended" plate. In other
words, while the width, thickness and profile of the plate are
specified, the length of plates and clamps can be varied. This makes
it possible to size various plates and clamps for their specific
purpose. For example, longer mounting plates and clamps can be used
to support heavier loads.

The second advantage, is that there are manufacturers who make plates
which are very specifically sized and machined for specific pieces of
Nikon gear. Thus the plates are less obtrusive and can be left on the
gear all of the time with a minimum amount of annoyance. For more
information about Arca Swiss QRs and my favorite manufacturer of QR
plates see www.reallyrightstuff.com
