The 35 - 70 f3.3 - 4.5 zoom got a very good review in The Nikon Handbook.
I'm thinking of getting one myself for my FM2n. It also has (semi) Macro
capability. They're usually about 150 USD used. As you're in Santa
Barbara, there's a pretty good chance that Del's has one.
