I recently bought a MC-10 cable release for my n70. I was told that i could do a "partial" press to activate the focus/meter, but I was out today using it for the first time, and it only took the picture. I was looking through the viewfinder as I pushed down the button, and It never activated the meter until it took the picture. I them did it a second time pressing very slowly. Same thing.
