Did you get a response to this question?  I have a 283 which I want to use with my 
N90s but have heard the same thing.  I would be keen to know the answer if you got one.

I'm thinking about getting A N90s for Christmas, and was wondering if it
would be OK to use the Vivitar on this camera? I thought I read
somewhere that it might damage the camera. I may be awhile before I can
afford to get a SB27 or 28.  Thanks, David
