An hour (12:45-1:45) spent seawatching at Robert Moses State Park this
afternoon produced 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER and 2 BLACK TERNS. With the exception
of a Forster's Tern, the first 40 minutes yielded only low numbers of
Northern Gannets, Common and Least terns, and Herring and Great Black-backed
gulls. The Black Terns were first to inject excitement into the proceedings,
slowly working their way east ~100 yards offshore, foraging as they went.
The shearwater came by next, 10 minutes or so after the terns departure and
at least triple the distance from shore. It was in more of a hurry, using
a more direct, powered style of flight than the more often seen high arcs
and long, shearing glides.
