I did not see the Rufous this afternoon but some birders said that it was in the same entry area (81 Street) of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) at the "Rose Center" this morning. It was freezing and probably it was perching some place near by.
The juvenile Red-Headed Woodpecker was in the same area that Tom Fiore has mentioned before (North-NW side of the Hallett Sanctuary in the park's southeast corner). It was flying low and feeding on the ground. The best spot to view the bird is at the end of the path that goes from the pond in direction to the ice skating rink (parallel to Center Drive). I took some pictures of the Red-Headed Woodpecker and (as you can see) it has a few reddish spots but the head is still brown. This is a link to a picture of the bird feeding on the ground. http://www.pbase.com/image/140612505 Good luck if you go to see the bird, FP -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
