I'll throw in my 2 cents, FWIW (not much) as one of the "ripped off" authors
in the Ultimate Classes book. The version of the Sonomancer used in UPC was
from the NBoC, not from my later Enchiridion of Mystic Music.
I was flipping through OPC in my FLGS when I happened to note my class
sitting there. I flipped excitedly to the S15. Not seeing my name there, I
was disappointed. I sent Mongoose an E-mail, from my "Publisher" address, a
few days before I was contacted by Becky and Dwayne from the NBoC. My
e-mail, in essence, stated,
"It was nice to see my stuff in your book.
It wasn't nice not to get credit in S15.
That disappointed me.
I noticed there was other stuff missing as well from the S15.
Please let me know what you intend to do to rectify this situation."
I received no response. I sent it again a week or so later. Still no
response. When Becky and Dwayne contacted me, my suggestion for a "cure"
was the following:
1.) Mongoose should update the S15 so as to be correct in all future
printings of the book.
2.) Mongoose should send each contributor a free copy of the (updated) UPC
book.
For the record, I stand by that as what I will be more than happy to accept
as an acceptable cure. I have no beef with Mongoose outside of, "hey, a
little credit would be nice" (and I do enjoy their products). I feel my
method makes sure my name is in S15 and it gives me a product I can get
"bragging rights" with when I show it off to my friends. And I think it is
reasonable - Mongoose has to update S15 no matter what... and the expense
involved in shipping a copy of the book to the contributors is the "slap on
the wrist" that hopefully gets the lesson across without being vindictive.
I know I appreciated it when Clark & Co. shipped me a copy of Mithril: City
of the Golem for helping out pricing items in R&R (I volunteered to do it
not expecting anything). I think that a free copy of the product in
question is not at all an inapporpriate reward for contributing to it.
I will write more later on the OGC Designation issue (one of my pet peeves),
but there is my own little take on This topic.
I don't want to make Matt into a punching bag - he seems to be trying to do
the right thing. I just hope this renews our "being careful" in putting out
products in the future. And in general, I think the "free copy to anyone
whose OGC you re-use" is a pretty nice policy. Which reminds me, I have a
couple more e-mails with links to send... ;-)
