I had the carb on my '70 350 rebuilt by a friend (who owed me a favor) for the cost of the carb kit so I didn't know how much it cost to *pay* someone to do it. Now I'd like to have my '86 E4MC rebuilt.

I looked at Sparky's Carb Service and they want $350! I had no idea it would be so pricey.

Doug Roe's carb book can be had for $17 and a carb kit for around $25...I even have a non-important '77 4bbl I can practice on. I also have a '55 4bbl that needs to be rebuilt, too.

Is this something an intermediate shade-tree mechanic can attempt himself?

Rebuilding a carburetor isn't rocket science. As long as you're methodical about it (and as long as the rebuild kit has all the right bits in it...a problem which has bitten me on more than one occasion), it's maybe an afternoon's work.

The first carb I rebuilt was the little 2-bbl on my Chevette. That was easy. Quadrajets (at least the one in my Cutlass) are only a little more tricky (part of the power piston sticks above the gasket between the choke section and the venturi section while the rest goes below, and there are some relatively delicate springs attached), but they're still doable. I didn't even have Roe's carb book at the time, but I've since remedied that (found it at Fry's, of all places).
