This might be the best way to explain what I think is happening in some 
C++ code.

b = .bar~new()
say b~test
b~tryToSetIt()
say b~test
b~setIt()
say b~test

::class foo

::attribute test

::class bar subclass foo

::method tryToSetIt
     expose test
     test = 'This is a test'

::method setIt
     self~'test=':super('This is a test')

How would you accomplish the setIt method in C++?
