If you're using opensocial-0.8, the code snippet you've provided
should always work. That said, sandbox.orkut should be used only for
initial testing of your app as it is slightly unstable because of
changes being continuously pushed to it. You might want to try your
app out on prod.sandbox.orkut which is a more stable environment. If
you're still seeing these intermittent errors, please include the app
url and I can take a look at it.
