With thousands of processes, and multiple instances of either of those programs running, they can eat quite a bit of CPU themselves, according to some stories out there. Haven't seen it personally, but even with a small number of processes, top is often the top CPU user, not quite so often the case with prstat. This message posted from opensolaris.org
