Project Name
------------
The proposed name of the project is Printable Many Page Solaris Manuals.

Closely Aligned Communities
---------------------------

There are two communities whose goals most closely align with the aims and objectives of this proposal. One is the Immigrants community as it is a community that: "...is tasked specifically with helping ease the burden and retraining frustrations of migration to or exploration of OpenSolaris. We hope to foster a friendly and professional environment where experienced administrators, users, and developers can explore Solaris & OpenSolaris." (1)

The other is the Documentation community.

Aims and Objectives
-------------------

The aim of this project is to create a set of one to five page printable Solaris manuals to cover different aspects of Solaris use and/or administration both in a server environment and desktop operating system environment. The manuals will be released as PDF and text documents. The primary source for the manuals will be in an open format. A “port” of the One Page Linux Manual, mentioned below, will be available within four weeks of the project's start.

A final objective will be to obtain Sun's official endorsement of these documents as tools to use to further the spread of Solaris thus any license selected will need to be able to be endorsed by Sun either now or in the very near future.

Similar Existing Works
----------------------

The primary idea for this project comes from the One Page Linux Manual (2) which was developed by an Australian Linux user who laid out a set of useful command line tools as he learned the GNU/Linux system. He later formatted his “manual” to fit onto one page (a double sided A4 print) and found that people requested it often enough to release on the Internet.

Unix has also had a long tradition of using online information via its well setout and indexed man pages. This is a natural extension to these pages as it gives extremely useful clues to the most needed commands required without even having to log onto the user's system.

Roadmap
-------

The project participants will determine one or more means to ascertain what type of printable manuals will be useful to a user faced with an OpenSolaris based system. With this information, the participants will develop the manuals using a system of peer review to ensure the quality of the work. As manuals become available, the project leader will announce their availability and work with Sun and the OpenSolaris communities to promote the use of the manuals.

Extra Project Requirements
--------------------------
This project would need no further requirements than those that can be managed as detailed on the OpenSolaris web-site (3).
