Hehe. =:oD This is a classic little thing in the Linux world (and I suppose *BSD folks would also be included): If you ask 10 people which distibution (a distribution is the term we use for what you called "variations") to use on something, you'll be likely to get somewhere between 5 and 10 different answers. =:o) I have my favorite... but I'm not going to interject it. As another person said, it generally doesn't matter too much. People pick up a feel for Linux distributions - and which one they want to use primarily - by trying different ones themselves.
