I'll reiterate this, is there any chance of Orion going OpenSource? It would
certainly make it much more attractive from out point of view. Currently
we're considering WebSphere, WebLogic and JRun for our next project (so
there's big $ flying around) but it's impossible to convince any manager to
spend money, or trust a large web project on a piece of software with the
backing of two guys (no matter how good it is ;))

OpenSource is the way to go - and for the author's / maintainer's there are
still plenty of avenues for money making. (eg GCC, SendMail, Netscape -
maybe ;)) I for one would be happy to contribute source to the project, and
I'm sure there are plenty of others who would too.

Release early, release often!

My $0.02

Mike

hmmmm

I hope they go Open-Source & duplicate the success of Linux.
Such a small team will surely get bought out and the product either
shelved [ala JWS2.0] or the licencing fees will cost a fortune.

Go Open Source Guys!

I can tell you from talking to one of the two Orion guys....this is a
feature they are going to add, possibly by 1.0, maybe sooner. However,
right now, ALL JSP pages are compiled in memory. Another feature I and
others have requested is to be able to select the java compiler. Right
now
it uses the JDK compiler (I think), which is pretty slow. The JIKES
compiler is VERY fast at compiling and I think would be great if we
could
plug it in.

Keep in mind one thing. There are only TWO guys, mostly one, working on
Orion. I am damn impressed at the amount of stuff they have done
compared
to other app servers built by teams of developers with large money
backing.
These guys have made Orion WELL worth the $1500 they charge. I think
they
should be bought up for millions myself, and get this product out to
everyone! Its super easy to set up, has proven to work stable, reliable,
and very fast, and it offers alot of features other app servers dont.
Not
to mention they are keeping on top of the latest specs as they come out!

All I can say is...FAST TYPER! Anyone who can do all that has got to be
typing a LOT faster than I! :)

Keep up the good work Orion team.
