Patterns can be stored in Hashtables and HashMaps. This is done by the PatternCache classes. Whatever you're running into is peculiar to HashSet. HashSet.hashCode() is going into an infinite loop because the HashIterator.hasNext() is always returning true (from looking at the stack trace and the java.util.* source code). It looks like you may have found a bug in Josh Bloch's collections code. If you're using an older JVM, I'd try a newer one and see if the problem goes away.
