Brother printers have worked well for me so far. I've got 2 of them at
work. A MFC-9700 multifunction laser (printer/fax/scanner), a HL-1650
duplexing laser (it can print both sides of a page). At home, I have a
HL-1440, which is their bottom of the line laser (I got it for $89 on
sale!).

The MFC-9700 is hosted by a Win98se box, and is a LAN printer. The HL-1650
is hosted by a Win95 box, and is also a LAN printer. At home, the HL-1440
is hosted by a Mandrake Linux 9.1 (CUPS) box, and is also on the LAN.

As far as work s/w goes, it's the usual suspects (Protel 99se, MS Office
2000, Acrobat, etc.) running on W2K and W9X boxes. At home, it's
OpenOffice, Word, etc. on XPhome, XPpro, Win98se, and Mandrake 9.X, all
printing to the HL-1440.

Hmmm, maybe I have good success with the Brother printers because my host
boxes are running either old versions of Windows, or Linux? Strange...
Most Brother printers are well supported under Linux using the CUPS printer
drivers. That support does not come from Brother, IIRC, it's those Open
Source dudes that contribute it.

As for HP, I have a HP P1000 (Photosmart series) inkjet which works well,
although the most recent s/w for it sucks. What sucks about it is some
print utility (SUCHOSTP) that runs in the background. When I try to shut
down the W98se box, a dialog box pops up that tells me Windows cannot shut
down because SUCHOSTP is still running. So I have to manually end that
SUCHOSTP task, and then Windows will shut down. What's really wierd about
it is that the HP printer isn't even hosted on the Windows box. It's also
on the Mandrake 9.1 box (HL-1440 is on parallel port, HP P1000 is on USB
port). If I were to roll back the HP Windows print driver to an earlier
version, I could probably eliminate that quirk. But there was a reason I
upgraded the print driver (some bug that I can't remember now). So, yeah,
HP printer s/w does kinda suck. Most HP printers are also well supported
under Linux with CUPS, once again by the Open Source dudes. IIRC, HP did
cooperate by sending them specs, or something.

Sometime next year, we will be moving the Brother printers (and an Epson
inkjet) at work over to our Linux server, and retire the ancient W9X print
host boxes.
