Thanks for everyone's help.  

I checked and the two tickets DID NOT have a customer assigned to them. (I'll 
have to dig into why THAT happened)  Anyway, as Nicole said, without an 
assigned customer, the system was e-mailing the "successfully closed" message 
which automatically re-opened the tickets.  I'm assuming without an assigned 
customer, the system was defaulting to the system's own mail address.

make sure the ticket owner/customer is specified with anything else than the 
ticket systems own mailaddress. Otherwise closing the ticket will cause an 
e-mail to that address telling "successfully closed" which re-opens the ticket.
